Director's Message
Dionisio Herrera, TEPHINET Director

Dear Colleagues:
TEPHINET is highly interested in supporting the Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETP) and Field Epidemiology Laboratory Training Programs. Most of our programs work very diligently to increase the impact of their activities and to improve the quality of the training programs.

This edition of TEPHINEWS coincides with our preparations for the FETP Director’s meeting to be held in Lyon this coming September. This meeting’s main focus is to achieve a consensus on an implementation plan for the accreditation process which will help increase the quality and sustainability of the epidemiology field training programs. Another important objective is to identify opportunities for the programs to collaborate with the WHO regional office, the TEPHINET Secretariat and the regional networks in the accreditation process and to continue to promote the value of TEPHINET as a platform for collaboration for FE(L)TP programs, trainees, graduates, and the community as a whole. TEPHINET has organized this three-day Director’s meeting with the collaboration and support of the WHO office in Lyon.

Our 48 member programs have been diligently working towards improving the quality of the learning process as well as the capacity to establish priorities in the organization such as promoting good quality training.
Our Secretariat is also supporting many public health projects under two cooperative agreements with the US CDC. Some of the areas of work include:  supporting the FE(L)TP programs, Flu surveillance activities, HIV surveillance and prevention in the most at risk populations, and chronic disease trainings in several priority countries.

In this edition, we have also included an article on the highly successful International Night as well as the dates and locations of the regional conferences planned for November and December in the different regions of the world. Thank you for your continued confidence in us. Your collaboration, coordination of activities and support are key elements in fulfilling the TEPHINET mission.
Warm Regards,
Dionisio Herrera, MD, PhD
