Head Scientific Coordinator, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control
Aftab Jasir is Head Scientific Coordinator at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Her education is in medicine with two PhDs (pathology and epidemiology). She has been an associate professor in medical microbiology at Lund University in Sweden since 2009. She has proven leadership experience in setting up and running national, European and international public health projects over 20 years.
In 2010, she started her career at ECDC as an expert microbiologist working with developing the core function of public health laboratories in Europe. In the same year, she was given the task to develop the European Public Health Microbiology training program (EUPHEM) as Chief Scientific Coordinator. Over ten years, EUPHEM became an inspiration for other countries to start similar programs, most recently the Global Laboratory Leadership Programme (GLLP) which has involvement from six partners working across different disciplines: Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Professor Jasir has been a member of the TEPHINET Accreditation Working Group (AWG) since its beginning, contributing to the development of the accreditation standards and indicators, manuals, and other accreditation documentation.
