Call for Abstracts

The TEPHINET Advisory Scientific Committee has the pleasure to invite advanced, intermediate, and Frontline Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) graduates and current trainees within the Americas Region and Lusophone FETP network to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations to be delivered at the 12th TEPHINET Regional Scientific Conference of the Americas to take place in Brazil in September 2023. The goal of the conference is to provide a platform for FETP graduates and trainees to showcase interventions and recent investigations, exchange ideas about best practices in public health, enhance global health collaboration, and increase their skills in field epidemiology.

Abstracts may be submitted in Spanish, Portuguese, French, or English. Refer to the attachments in the section on this page titled, "Submission Guidelines" for information on abstract format, a sample winning abstract, and evaluation criteria. Authors must follow the guidelines for abstract submission; abstracts not conforming to these guidelines will not be considered for presentation.

I. Sessions and Eligible Applicants

1. General Presentation Sessions

Eligible applicants: Current trainees/fellows and recent graduates (i.e., those who graduated after January 1, 2022) from intermediate and advanced level field-based training programs in applied epidemiology, veterinary, laboratory, and public health practice.

2. Special FETP Frontline Presentation Session

Eligible applicants: Current trainees/fellows and recent graduates (i.e., those who graduated after January 1, 2022) from Frontline or basic level field-based training programs in applied epidemiology, veterinary, laboratory, and public health practice.

II. Eligible Topics

Abstracts should cover investigations or projects undertaken and completed during training and within the past two years (i.e., no earlier than December 2021). In particular, abstracts should emphasize how the results of the investigation or an analysis were used to direct public health actions and also describe or estimate the public health impact.

We are interested in abstracts describing outbreak investigations, implementation and evaluation of public health programs or surveillance activities, non-communicable diseases, and other areas in applied epidemiology or public health practice (including environmental health, mental health, etc).

Abstracts should not represent work already published in peer-reviewed journals or previously accepted to an international conference (including TEPHINET global and regional conferences). Please refer to the attachments for guidance on abstract format, suggestions, and evaluation criteria.

III. Conference Format and Capacity

Each accepted abstract will be presented as either a poster presentation or an oral presentation (the format will ultimately be decided through a process of peer review and TEPHINET Advisory Scientific Committee review).

IV. Submission Procedures and Deadlines

Submission of abstracts: Individual authors must coordinate their submissions with their program directors.

Abstracts must be submitted by program directors or their respective delegates. TEPHINET will share the link for submitting abstracts directly with programs by April 30, 2023. The link will prompt program directors or their delegates to create an account and log into Ex Ordo, TEPHINET’s abstract management platform. For questions on this process, please contact Valerie Young at abstracts@tephinet.org.

NOTE: TEPHINET will NOT consider any abstract submitted by an individual who is not a program director or his/her delegate, nor will TEPHINET consider any abstracts submitted via email or outside of the Ex Ordo platform.

  • Deadline for final abstracts: The deadline to submit abstracts via Ex Ordo is April 30, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). Please note that there will be NO extension to this deadline.
  • Evaluation: All abstracts submitted will be reviewed by three qualified, independent scientific reviewers.
  • Acceptance: Program Directors and the corresponding author will be notified of acceptance by late June 2023.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Valerie Young at abstracts@tephinet.org.
