Call for Applicants: Orientation to International Outbreak Response with GOARN and WHO Virtual Workshop

The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) and TEPHINET are pleased to announce two upcoming virtual workshops (Orientation to International Outbreak Response with GOARN and WHO) targeted specifically to residents and graduates of Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs). These two-day virtual workshops will train approximately 60 TEPHINET member program residents and alumni from around the world on the processes, realities, and challenges of working as an epidemiologist in the field on an outbreak response mission. These virtual learning opportunities are a collaborative effort between GOARN, TEPHINET, and the partners providing the workshop faculty.

Workshop Date:

Applicants may apply to attend one of two (2) separate workshops, one in late January and one in late February of 2021 (exact dates to be announced). This call for applicants is for both workshops.

Each workshop will be two (2) days in length for three (3) hours each day.

Workshop Goal:

This workshop introduces participants to the opportunities, processes, challenges and realities of working as part of an international multidisciplinary outbreak response team on a GOARN deployment with the World Health Organization. This workshop will enable participants to self-reflect upon their suitability and interest in volunteering to deploy with GOARN and WHO internationally, and will provide participants with the necessary information to apply for deployment as well as further development opportunities available for them to enhance their readiness and pre-deployment skills.

Who Can Apply?

This workshop targets FETP graduates and current advanced-level residents who are interested in deploying internationally with GOARN and WHO. Eligible applicants must possess a minimum of three to ten (3 to 10) years of relevant work experience (see below) and have participated in at least two (2) outbreak investigation missions at the national or international level.

  1. Professionals with three to ten (3 to 10) years of post-FETP experience and technical experience in epidemiology and surveillance.
  2. Those who have participated in a minimum of two (2) outbreak investigation missions at the national or international levels, who are interested in deploying internationally with GOARN and WHO, and who are committed, with the support of their institution, to deploying on a GOARN field mission within the next two years.
  3. English proficiency (able to communicate in academic and professional settings)
