FETP Frontline Graduates Boost Disease Surveillance Capacity in Ecuador
Atlanta, Georgia, USA – December 19, 2017

On December 18 and 19, 2017, Ecuador’s Frontline Field Epidemiology Training Program will graduate its second cohort of trainees comprising 27 surveillance professionals from Zones 2, 4, 5, and 7. Training of Cohort 2 took place in Portoviejo, Manabi, near the western coast of Ecuador, through classroom and field-based methods over a period of three months.

Through the incorporation of these professionals within Ecuador’s public health workforce, the Ministry of Public Health will have strengthened disease surveillance capacity with coverage ranging from 26% to 93% in all targeted zones.

Through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), TEPHINET has been instrumental in providing technical, operational, and financial support towards the implementation and launch of Frontline FETPs across Latin America and the Caribbean.

“Our mission at TEPHINET is to empower and mobilize a competent field epidemiology workforce,” says Dr. Angela Hilmers, Senior Associate Director for Science at TEPHINET. “With FETP Frontline we expand workforce capabilities at all levels of the surveillance system in a relatively short amount of time.”

“TEPHINET has been essential in the implementation of FETP Frontline in Ecuador,” says Dr. Mayling Encalada, National Director of Health Surveillance at the Ministry of Public Health. “We look forward to continuing our partnership to build epidemiological capacity in this country.”

TEPHINET is a global network of field epidemiology training programs (FETPs) with a vision that all people are protected by a field epidemiology workforce capable of detecting and responding to health threats. With a secretariat based at The Task Force for Global Health in Atlanta, TEPHINET consists of 69 FETPs working in more than 100 countries.
