Support to the Kenya Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program

Project Objective

To increase the self-sufficiency of the national surveillance system to identify and respond to unusual health-related events as part of a more integrated public health system in Kenya by continuing with frontline and intermediate level field epidemiology training courses.

Activities

• Continue to increase the number of functional field epidemiologists specializing in enhanced disease detection and response through training up to 150 health workers at the national, county, and sub-county levels.
• Improve the use of technology and adaptive learning techniques for enhanced disease detection and response.
• Improve efficiency of current systems for disease surveillance, disease detection, outbreak response, and service delivery through increasing the numbers of competent local field epidemiologists.
• Continue to develop an integrated field epidemiology training process in Kenya by adding basic field epidemiology components to the existing two-year, degree-granting field epidemiology and laboratory training program within the Ministry of Health.

Outputs

Evaluate the improved impact of the bio-surveillance workforce on detecting and responding to public health events in Kenya.
