TEPHINET Co-organizes Workshop to Strengthen Program Management Capacity of African Ministries of Health

From September 24-28, the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with TEPHINET and Guidehouse (formerly PwC Public Sector LLP), held a training workshop on program management in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The objective of the workshop, which was aimed at ministry of health personnel, was ultimately to enhance the program and business administration capacity of ministries of health in participating countries by strengthening participants’ ability to administer and sustain Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) public health programs through appropriate planning, resource allocation, management, and partner engagement. Throughout the week, participants learned the steps of comprehensive program planning and management and applied this knowledge during interactive exercises using models from their institutions.

On the first day, Miriam Alderman, deputy director of TEPHINET, led a session on strategic planning. This session gave the participants a valuable opportunity to discuss their ideas and share their experiences regarding how to overcome challenges in aligning competing resources and stakeholder interests to best serve the population.

Other training sessions, which were led by a multidisciplinary team of professionals from various sectors, covered the following topics:

  • Program management
  • Financial management and planning
  • Supply chain management
  • Sustainability planning

In total, 26 ministry of health personnel attended the workshop from the following countries: Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Guinea, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Togo, as well as two representatives from WHO/AFRO. TEPHINET provided travel and logistics support for the event.

TEPHINET is proud to continue our collaboration with NCIRD. In 2017, TEPHINET and NCIRD co-organized a similar workshop in Dar es Salaam on Grants Management for GHSA and Influenza Grantees.
