TEPHINET Leads Inaugural Meeting of the Global Accrediting Body for FETP Accreditation

Accreditation is an opportunity for field epidemiology training programs (FETPs) to align with common standards that assess program capacity and increase training quality and recognition of their value in supporting country public health priorities.
In March 2016, TEPHINET convened its Global Accrediting Body, for the first time, to decide whether to confer accreditation status to the FETPs that applied during this cycle of accreditation.

The meeting was held in Atlanta, Georgia at the offices of TEPHINET’s parent organization, The Task Force for Global Health. In his welcome statement to the Global Accrediting Body, The Task Force’s President and Chief Executive Officer, David Ross, ScD, pledged his wholehearted support for accreditation, emphasizing its importance in establishing a baseline of excellence against which entities—including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—can gauge the impact of their investments in global field epidemiology.

Dionisio Herrera, MD, PhD, the Director of TEPHINET, described the gathering as “perhaps one of the most important meetings ever held by TEPHINET” and described the launch of the FETP accreditation process as the culmination of a dream for the network. The process and standards for accreditation were developed over a five-year period under the guidance of TEPHINET’s global network of programs, its Accreditation Working Group, the TEPHINET Advisory Board, and other partners.

TEPHINET would like to thank the following people for their time and dedication to strengthening applied epidemiology and public health capacity through improving FETPs: the Global Accrediting Body (members listed below), the volunteer reviewers (whose thorough assessments informed the final decisions), and the staff of the FETPs for all their hard work in completing the accreditation application.
