The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) and TEPHINET have designed these self-guided eLearning modules to enrich the professional skills and increase core competencies of the laboratory workforce. These eLearning modules should be used in combination with existing laboratory personnel training as part of a comprehensive workforce development strategy to enhance overall laboratory capacity.

Modules

Upon completion of this module, learners should be able to describe the principles of clear and accurate communication in a public health setting, explain the importance of circumstances and audience in planning all communication, and define risk communication and understand how it differs from routine communications.

Upon completion of this module, learners should be able to list the principles of quality management system as they apply to laboratory operations, illustrate the laboratory’s relevant organizational structure and processes, identify non-conforming events using given pre-examination, examination, and post-examination indicators. Learners will also be able to describe policies, processes and procedures related to the QMS Continuous Quality Improvement, or CQI, program.

Upon completion of this module, learners should be able to outline how to identify, assess and mitigate hazards in the public health laboratory, describe public health laboratory emergency response protocols, and describe a public health laboratory emergency response plan and any other necessary emergency preparedness activities.
