APDC-FETP Fellowship: Letter of Intent Instructions 

Individuals interested in submitting a project proposal for the APDC FETP Fellowship under the TEPHINET Small Grants Program must first submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) together with supporting documents that include letters of recommendation, which are essential for the LOI to be considered. LOIs are due by 11:59 pm Atlanta/EST on Friday, August 11th, 2023. Both the Letter of Intent and project proposal must be submitted in English. 

Your LOI should consist of a one-page description of the proposed project that must contain the following information: 

  • Project title 
  • Name and affiliation of Principal Investigator (applicant).  
  • Expected collaborators and significant institutional participants. Applicants MUST identify the following or the application will not be considered:  
    • In-country mentor who should have subject matter expertise in their project area at their ministry of health (MOH), APDC site, National Public Health Institute (NPHI), academic institution, or public-private partnership for the duration of the grant funded project. Important: In-country mentors are expected to demonstrate time commitment in the form of monthly meetings attendance, input and review of Grantee documents, which applicants should bear in mind as they select their in-country mentor. 
    • Institution and/or laboratory that the Applicant is affiliated with, to conduct their proposed project. 
  • The proposed project (i.e. description of your project)  
  • Goal and main objectives (stated as public health purpose of the project) 
  • Data and human subject involvement (i.e. describe type, source and method of data collected). The project scope must be non-research or exempt human subjects research as defined by Task Force for Global Health guidance and US Federal Guidelines. 
  • Reporting (i.e. what do you expect to report and to whom) 

In addition, please attach the following: 

  • CV of the applicant 
  • Letter of support from in-country mentor and mentor CV. The letter must include clear information on:  
    • Why your mentor believes you are well suited for the APDC FETP Fellowship (for instance, specific examples that demonstrate your experience, skillset and qualifications, and relevance to this fellowship opportunity). 
    • How this fellowship, in their view, will benefit you and your FETP.  
    • How they, as your in-country mentor, will plan to support you and your project in the event that you are selected for the award. 
  • Letter of support from MOH, NPHI, academic institution, APDC site and/or other institution that will collaborate with applicant on their project. The letter from the institution(s) must include clear information on:  
    • Their permission, if applicable, that confirms your ability to apply for this fellowship and their collaboration with you on your project. 
    • How they will collaborate with you (for example, will they provide resources, what type of resources will they provide).
    • Any other institution capabilities and/or areas of support that they will provide and are relevant to your project.  
  • Letter of support from the FETP Director or FETP Program Resident Advisor (if different from in-country SME/mentor). Similarly, here, the letter must include clear information on:  
    • How and why your FETP Director or Resident Advisor believes you are suited for the APDC FETP Fellowship (for instance, specific examples that demonstrate your experience, skillset and qualifications, and relevance to this fellowship opportunity). 
    • How they will plan to support you and your project in the event that you are selected for the award. 
    • How this fellowship, in their view, will benefit you and your FETP.  

Please limit the Letter of Intent to no more than 2 pages – 1 page for the letter and 1 page for the one-page project summary plus the attachments.  Please use the templates that have been provided. 

Important: File naming convention must follow the format of Your Surname_Type of Document. For example: Smith_Letter of Intent, Smith_Project Summary, Smith_Personal CV, Smith_Mentor CV, Smith_Letter of Support1, Smith_Letter of Support2 etc.

Applicants whose LOIs are selected to submit a full proposal are expected to be notified in September, 2023, and will receive instructions at that time on how to submit their full proposal through the TEPHINET website submission system.
